4 Tips for Successful Sofa Shopping

When it comes to investing in one of the biggest pieces of furniture in the home, it pays to get it right first time! Buying a sofa is a big deal, not just because of its size, but also because it is where we spend most of our time relaxing, entertaining and sometimes sleeping! Of course, everyone has their own style preferences but there are also a few essential criteria that every sofa needs to fulfil to ensure that you get the best sofa for you.

So, how do you make sure your sofa shopping trip is successful?

Measure, measure, measure

The biggest issue for any new piece of furniture is whether it is going to fit into the space you have for it. Measure your room and make a note of the dimensions that it can take. It’s also a very good idea to measure the doorway of the room it is going into, as well as your front door and the hallway. The sofa may well be able to sit nicely in the lounge, but if you can’t physically get it through the front door then you’re going to have problems!

Check the framework

A good framework is key for a long-lasting, quality sofa. Look for sofas constructed from hardwood as they will last forever without warping on you. Sofas made from other materials may cost less but are also less likely to last as long. A good test for the quality of a sofa is to pick up one corner, if the other corner doesn’t come off the floor at the same time then the frame is probably twisting which means it is not as strong as a hardwood frame.

Ask about the springs

Springs aren’t always visible on a sofa, so ask the sales assistants a few questions about them to determine whether they are of good quality. You can also gauge the effectiveness of the springs by feeling them through the upholstery to work out how supportive they are and whether they are likely to lose their shape over time.

Test the cushions

Comfortable cushions are a vital part of any sofa selection. They should be firm and able to quickly regain their shape after they have been sat on. Everyone has different preferences for softness when it comes to sinking into a sofa, but generally the firmer the cushions, the more supportive and long-lasting they will be.
