According to the NHS, nearly a third of the population is suffering from insomnia and sleep problems. Lack of sleep can contribute to all kinds of physical and mental health issues, such as heart disease, inability to concentrate, diabetes and depression.
So, how can you make sure that you are getting enough shut-eye? Turning your bedroom into a sleep oasis is a good place to start!
Check the thermostat
Studies suggest that the optimum temperature for our sleep environments should be between 16-18°C. Any warmer than this and our bodies find it more difficult to relax and go to sleep. This is because our internal temperatures drop slightly when it’s time to go to sleep, so sleeping in a warm room prevents this from happening and makes it trickier to go to sleep.
Use a white noise machine
If you find that you are regularly woken by noises in the night, it might be a good idea to invest in a white noise machine to drown out any sounds. When you regularly incorporate a white noise machine into your sleep routine, it can become a powerful reminder for your brain that it’s time to switch off and sleep.
Research shows that the blue light emitted from tablets, phones and laptops can play havoc with our natural circadian rhythms. The light can trick our bodies into thinking that it’s still time to be awake, so to avoid any impact on your natural sleep cycle, ban all electronics from the bedroom for at least 2 hours before you go to sleep.
You know the saying – cluttered room, cluttered mind! Create a sense of peaceful calm in your room by removing any unnecessary clutter and by making all efforts to keep it as tidy as possible. Put washing away as soon as it’s dry, take out any stacks of magazines and declutter your windowsills and shelf spaces. This will help to promote a calming effect in your bedroom which in turn will encourage your mind to relax.
