How to Get More Sleep

Research indicates that more than a third of the UK population doesn’t get enough sleep. Whether you are new parent, a shift worker or a lifelong insomniac, sleepless nights can have a huge impact on our mental and physical wellbeing.

So, how do you make sure that you get enough?

Change your priorities

Sleep is an absolutely essential part of ensuring that our minds and bodies work effectively. If you find that your busy schedule isn’t allowing enough time for you to get sleep, then it’s time to change it. Make sleep your number one priority and work back from there.

Pay back your debt

When we don’t get enough sleep, we rack up a sleep debt. While it’s not possible to pay back your debt with a couple of long lie-ins at the weekend, the good news is that it is possible to pay back some of this debt by sleeping a bit longer each day Try to head to bed 15 minutes earlier each night for a week and increase it gradually from there.

Alternate nights

If you are a new parent, the best way to handle the sleeplessness is to alternate caregiving duties every night. This gives you both time to catch up on the sleep you missed out on the night before. It’s also essential to go to bed when your baby does, so that you maximise your sleep.

Change your environment

If you’re not getting enough sleep it may well be the environment that you’re sleeping in. Make sure that the bedroom is thoroughly clean and regularly aired out. Install blackout blinds if you are disturbed by the light and invest in new bedding if your pillows are feeling a little less supportive.

Check your mattress

If you’re waking up feeling achy and stiff, then it may well be your mattress that’s causing it. Check for signs of wear and tear, such as springs poking out, lumpy areas or sagging. If you spot any of these issues, then perhaps it’s time to replace your mattress and treat yourself to the night’s sleep that you deserve.
