How to Reduce Allergens in the Home

Any hay fever sufferer will know the dread that comes with the summer months! It can be super difficult to enjoy the sunny weather when you’re spending most of your time sneezing and wiping streaming eyes. While you can’t do much to control the pollen outside your home, there are plenty of ways that you can minimise the effects of it inside your home. These are our top tips for keeping your home an allergy-free zone.

1. Keep windows shut
Keeping your windows shut is an effective way to prevent pollen and allergens from getting into the home. Draw the curtains or blinds to stop the sun from heating up the room and keep it nice and cool.

2. Change when you get home
While you’re outside, pollen attaches itself to your clothes. When you get in, get changed and put your work clothes straight into the wash basket to prevent the pollen particles from spreading around the house.

3. Hoover regularly
If you have a hoover with a HEPA filter, make sure that you use it regularly to pick up dust mites, mould spores and pollen particles. Aim to hoover the whole house, including upholstery and mattresses, a couple of times a week to minimise allergens.

4. Use an air purifier
Running an air purifier in each room of the house is a great way to remove allergens from the air around you. Set it up in your bedroom for several hours before you go to sleep so that you can enjoy a night of rest without sneezing every few minutes.

5. Keep your bedding clean
You would be surprised at how much dust and dirt can accumulate in your bedding, so ensure that you wash all sheets and blankets on a 60° wash once a week. It’s also a good idea to have your duvets and pillows service washed every now and then to keep allergens at bay.

6. Stay tidy
The more clutter you have around you, the more places there are for allergens to hide. Try to stay as tidy as possible by regularly decluttering and making sure that everything is organised.
