Tips for Decorating Children’s Rooms

No matter how hard we try to keep up with them, children grow so quickly that it can be difficult to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to decorating their rooms. One moment they might be into fire trucks and farm animals and the next they are feeling grown up and want something that reflects their new teenage status. Luckily there are a few tips you can use to make sure that decorating transitions go as smoothly as possible!

1. Stick to neutrals
If you want to avoid painting the walls every few years, stick to a neutral palette and build up colour and patterns using cushions and bedding. This way it will be super easy to switch over when your little one starts to outgrow their current theme.

2. Create storage
Whether your child is young enough for piles of toys or is starting to take exams at school, storage is an absolutely essential element for their room. Where space is tight, use cabin beds to raise the bed up so that you can use the space underneath for clothes, toys, books and homework.

3. Use the walls
Children love to sprawl their things out all over the floor, so make sure that beds and other pieces of furniture are pushed up against the walls to maximise the floor space that they can use to play on.

4. Mix it up
For those times when siblings simply have to share a room, make sure they retain their sense of identity by giving them their own individual style within the room. Get them involved by letting them pick out their own bedding, artwork and lamps to style their part of the room.

5. Find their theme
Kids always have a specific interest for a while, whether it’s space, the circus, dinosaurs or unicorns. Work with their interest and incorporate their favourite things into the room, using curtains and wall stickers. These will be easy to remove and switch over once your child grows out of it.

6. Get them involved
Children love nothing more than feeling like they have been a part of the creative process, so get them involved in the decoration by having them help out with the painting or create some artwork for their new walls. Take them to the furniture store to help pick out their new bed and get them to choose a lampshade for their new room.
